First Minister attends 32nd British-Irish Council

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Government Business Michael Russell and Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse represented the Scottish Government at the 32nd meeting of the British-Irish Council in Manchester.

Ahead of the meeting the First Ministers of Scotland and Wales joined together to call on the future Prime Minister to rule out a ‘no deal’ Brexit.

Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse joined his counterparts in advance of the Summit to discuss the most effective way of transitioning to smart energy systems.

The Summit marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the British-Irish Council which was set up in 1999 as a forum to exchange information, discuss, consult and co-operate on matters of mutal interest.

At the latest Summit Ministers discussed the economy, trade and on-going relations with the EU.

The First Minister also held a number of meetings in the margins of BIC, and held talks with the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford and Ministers from the Isle of Man Government, Government of Jersey and Government of Guernsey.
